Frankie Byrne - Terenure Football Club - Founder
Frankie Byrne, a founder member of Terenure FC recently passed away after a short illness at the age of 72.
Otherwise known as the Lord Mayor of Terenure, Frankie was the driving force behind the Club and gave the last 36 Years of his life in devotion to promoting it's interests. Hailing from St Enda's Road area, Frankie was literally the man for all seasons. It was nothing for him to wash kit, mark the pitch, drive the kids to away matches, attend meetings and organise fundraisers and from the original first Schoolboy team which he was instrumental in setting up, the Club can now boast a healthy membership of three senior teams in the UCFL, Four Schoolboy Teams and a Young Childrens Nursery Section.
Dave Woolhead current Chairman, said , Frankie was simply Mr Terenure. I was a member of the original Schoolboy team back in 1970 and he was as enthusiastic then as he was up to a few short months before he fell ill. He did everything for this Club and filled every role from Groundsman, to Kit Man, to Manager and Secretary and he really will be missed by all of those players who have had the pleasure to have known him. He was an absolute Gentleman and his devotion over the last thirty six years has been nothing more than remarkable. He was a sterling worker and nothing troubled him and so many current and former players are so grateful for all his unstinting work over the years. At one stage, it was just Frankie running the whole show on his own and the current well-being of the Club is largely down to Frankie Byrne's drive and energy over all those years". Terenure Football Club – A brief History
Tír an Iúir in Irish = 'Land of the Yew Trees'
The late Frankie Byrne originally founded Terenure Football Club in 1970. Otherwise known as the Lord Mayor of Terenure, Frankie was the driving force behind the Club and gave the last 36 Years of his life in devotion to promoting its interests. Hailing from St Enda's Road area, Frankie was literally the man for all seasons. It was nothing for him to wash kit, mark the pitch, drive the kids to away matches, attend meetings and organise fundraisers and from the original first Schoolboy team which he was instrumental in setting up, the Club can now boast a healthy membership of three senior teams in the UCFL, Four Schoolboy Teams and a Young Children's Nursery Section.
Over these past years the club has gone through many changes and developments. Hundreds of players have dawn the Green and Black strip that is still retained to the present day. Managers, Coaches and Volunteers have played their part in keeping the Club going over all these years.
The Club has served the greater Terenure Area and attracts players and managers from fields as far as Inchicore, Drimnagh, the Liberties and as far as Oxmanstown on the north of the city. The attraction for playing with the Club is one not for “winning” but one for “Participation, friendship and most importantly having fun”. The Club can easily pride itself on this feat and for the past 36 years this is what has made Terenure Football Club the club it is today.
At its height in the period 1999 – 2001, the Club was at the height of its membership with over 165 School Children and over 50 Adults along with all the background members and volunteers.
In the 1990's The Club's Senior teams came from the Merging of two teams, Rathfarnham and Dundrum. Currently the club has three senior teams with approximately 60 adults playing. Less than 5 players remain from the original team.
The Club went through a merger with local side Mount Tallant in the late 90's to form Terenure Mount Tallant. This proved to be short lived and both clubs went their own ways.
The Schoolboy section of the Club has really developed the senior teams at the Club and as these once Schoolboy teams kicked footballs in Bushy Park from Under 13's up to under 17'/18's and now kick footballs in the VEC Grounds with the senior teams.
The Schoolboy section of the Club was always the lifeblood of the Club and will continue be so into the future. This along with the hard work and dedication of those managers, committee members and volunteers who give up their time week in week out keep Terenure Football Club going.
